Event Overview

CAC’s Professional Development series works to uncover subjects critical to professional artists outside of making art. Rooted in our core values of knowledge-sharing and building community, this 2-hr seminar will include plenty of Q&A time. Bring your experience and your questions to the group! Email us your questions in advance.

This Copyright Basics presentation offers a practical overview of intellectual property, with a focus on copyright fundamentals for artists and creatives. Barry F. Irwin and Victoria Hanson of Irwin IP, a part of Miller Johnson, will cover what intellectual property is, what types of creative works are protected by copyright, how fair use applies in real-world situations, and practical steps artists can take to protect their copyrights. The session will conclude with key takeaways and time for questions.

Barry F. Irwin is the founder of Irwin IP and has more than 30 years of experience litigating high-stakes intellectual property and technology matters in federal courts nationwide. He regularly handles complex patent, copyright, and technology disputes, has served as lead counsel in numerous Patent Office review proceedings, and works with clients to strengthen and expand their intellectual property portfolios. Barry has also been an Adjunct Professor at Notre Dame Law School since 2012, where he teaches Patent Litigation, Patent Law, and Advanced Copyright/Entertainment Law.

Victoria Hanson is an Associate at Irwin IP whose practice focuses on trademark prosecution and intellectual property litigation. She advises clients ranging from startups to global companies across industries including technology, consumer goods, entertainment, and healthcare, and regularly counsels on trademark clearance, registration, enforcement, and portfolio management. Victoria also assists clients with global branding strategies and drafts a variety of IP-related agreements, including licenses, social media agreements, governance documents, and terms of use.

This workshop will be hybrid. Participants may attend on-site or via zoom.  Registration is required.
