CAC was invited to commission three artists to create original, large-scale mural works at 1871, a new digital startup/incubator located in the Merchandise Mart.
The artists selected for this commission were Ruben Aguirre, Justus Roe, and Chris Silva. The finished murals cover more than 180 feet of stationary walls located at the entry of this dynamic 50,000-square-foot, Gensler-designed space that opened in May 2012.
With an eye towards building the next great technology companies and cultivating the creative forces behind them, 1871 is creating a community among designers, coders and entrepreneurs who will learn from each other, encourage each other, and share a journey up the steep startup learning curve. 1871 helps startups from their inception, offering classes specifically designed to empower entrepreneurs; talks from leading business-builders, technologists and designers; and inspirational sessions from artists and other creative professionals. 1871 is structured as a not-for-profit and is located on the 12th floor of the historic Merchandise Mart.
